So I’m thinking about getting a capture device. I have about $60 worth of best buy gift cards, but only so much cash on hand, so I’m thinking that the only affordable option for me is the Roxio Game Capture device. What I’d like to know is if it is worth the money as a:
    1. Recording Device
I bought the LOOT Machinima Bundle to help myself make more machinima vids, but I feel that I may need a recording device to get all the footage I need, given that the LOOT active camera prevents me from using my own avatar in the video. Can I get good quality footage out of Roxio, or is it better to work with the active camera?
    2. TV screen substitute
I am stranded at college without a personal tv. There is a tv in the common room of my dorm, but there’s WAY too much traffic there to spend any time on Home or any game on it. I hoping that the viewing window on the Roxio software can enable me to use my PS3 in my own room whenever I want. Can Roxio work this way without a tv? Will this viewing window work like a tv, or will the picture freeze frequently, rendering gaming impossible? Would it be better to buy a really small tv?
If anyone has used Roxio or a similar device and would answer my questions based on their experiences, that would be greatly appreciated.

    • Unfortunately I do not remember what its called but best buy has a device that sells for around 50 bucks, its not the best but does work. They have it in SD and HD, HD being the one that’s more expensive of course. I use a Hauppauge but they sell for around 200 bucks and they do make one that’ is “specifically for gaming” but either will work fine. There are a lot of other devices as well look around on Amazon or Ebay.

As for the Loot cam it works great for a lot of the video recording on home but I do have to use my DVR half the time. Also only way you can be in your own shots is to do what I and DOD did, buy a 2nd ps3. That way you can use your other avatar. Best to have 2 tv’s too but if you don’t u can do what I do. Just set up my recording ps3 and get the camera aimed then act out w/e scene it is. I usually pan out wide that way if I need to simulate the camera moving left or right I can do that in editing.

As for a tv, try going to good will u might be able to find a small CRT tv cheap or even 2 so you can do it in your dorm without interruption. the image you see will be crappy but the video you record should be clear. The only way you could do this with out a tv is if your computer/laptop has video inputs so you could hook up your ps3 but you will only be able to use 1 ps3 so you would have to rely on others to do all the acting.

Personally, if you could use the tv in the common room I would just go use that if yoru allowed. if not like I said you could get a decent used one at goodwill cheap. Might not have the connections you need but you can buy adapters anywhere, radio shack best buy hell even the internet lol
