Vocal Recording Tips
If you are recording vocals from your in-home studio, there are some easy things that you can do to improve the quality of your recordings, at low or no cost.
Here are a few:
Use a microphone stand – a small tripod on your table or desk works well. This will avoid hand movement sounds and help you position the mic properly to your mouth.
Know how to properly position your microphone relative to your mouth – the manufacturer will tell you where the sound is supposed to enter the microphone and distance from you for best results. Sometimes the position is not obvious; for example, certain mics take their sound from the side and not the top. Just looking at the mic, this is not apparent.
Use a pop filter on your microphone – properly positioned, it will reduce the explosive air sounds of the P’s and T’s, and breathing noises. There are many styles available, or you can even make your own (search YouTube for instructions).
I invite readers to post a photo of their home studio.
